Writing with an AI

I tried it yesterday for work (I am a researcher part-time). The assignment was to write a 300 – 500 word story with a given prompt using an AI as a kind of partner. It was – okay. I would say that the story the AI generated was interesting, if a little trite. Instead of accepting what it gave me, I provided the first part of the story and then passed it over to the AI. The story it spewed back was not at all in conjunction with the part of the story I gave it, so I tried again. Eventually it gave me something worth using but again the idea was hackneyed. This is not to say that this skills of AIs won’t improve over time. I just don’t see any of them developing the nuance of human emotions that you need to reach an audience. They will never feel the pressure of anxiety, know the rush of falling in love, the grief of losing someone. They will never know anticipation, excitement, longing, lust, fear, or horror, the feelings that go so deep because you have walked that road and that resonates with readers. These are the emotions that we learn through trial and error to tap into. AI’s will have their place in the world, but as writers – I don’t see it.

Have you tried it yet? What do you think?

  1. My translator friend is already getting less and less jobs with people translating themselves. I see that happening in marketing jobs like mine. I write copy and content at work and my colleague has already tried replacing me with ChatGPT for SEM – it worked fine, unfortunately. Sure, in creative writing AI will just be copy-pasting what it finds on the internet, but in other types of writing, I think it will make things faster and so people will use it, whether we like it or not… I mean, we are already being bombarded with unoriginal content everywhere (first, 5 best xx, then how to this or 11 things you must take into account when… and bullet points or emojis for bullet points…) I’m so sick of seeing this kind of content and often think it could just as well be produced by AI and no one would notice. Anyway, I’m happy I stumbled upon your blog, because I was looking for stories! 😊
