Developing a Social Media Presence

*Note to all who venture to read beyond the headline. This is not a tutorial. This is more of a query, or a progress report? Regardless, I don’t have the answers you seek. I seek the answers you have.

How far have you driven down the twisted highways of social media? I know that developing a following; making contacts; and creating an online persona are essential tools for being an agent of creativity. In the past month, I have started this blog, created a separate Facebook account, and started an Instagram, all of which are connected and you can access via my main page. (I apologize for the shameless self-promotion. Kind of. Not really. I do not apologize at all.) I am slowly figuring out WordPress and learning new tips and tricks every day.

There are roads I have yet to go down. I dislike Twitter and Tumbler. I use Reddit for work, but I am not sure about using it for anything else. And though I love to spend hours lost in booktok – I am so reluctant to begin making videos. Not to mention, I have full grown children that might be mortified if their mom attempted to break into that world.

How far have into social media have you ventured? Do you find one outlet better than the others? Does my home page need more organization? Is Frankenstein the best monster? The answer is yes, but I just threw that in to see if you were paying attention.

  1. I use Twitter but you end up following and being followed by other writers who just want you to buy their books. I now have more followers from cat sanctuaries and cat rescue centres than writers! They make me smile and cry in equal amounts each day. Who cares about making money…?
I use Instagram too, a more recent sign-up. Again, you interact with writers who want you to love their books. Now I just seem to have reels of young women with big boobs…Oh dear….
Facebook? Never liked it. And too many people from my old school days are on there. Who wants to find out how successful they’ve been???
Social Media is great if you are JK Rowling or Stephen KIng. Millions of people will follow for glimpses of your new book or the joy of getting a ‘like’ from their hero.
Sorry, a little cynical here. I expect others will give you a more optimistic outlook!
