The Queen

Because sometimes I dabble in poetry, so I thought, why not share some? I am not great at it, but occasionally I enjoy writing it.

You sit there on your diamond-encrusted throne

High upon your ivory tower, elevated there by the throngs of those who adore you.

Your wish, their command, giving you everything

Expecting nothing….

Laughing at your whims, understanding your sanctimonious posturing

And granting that it was more truth than bluster, deemed it deserved

Letting you revel in yourself and believing in the promise that was you

Acknowledging your beauty, your gracefulness and the need to cherish

The ephemeral passage of time…

And as time passed the world became distorted, too many commoners

Tainting the unblemished canvas

Your court wrapped around you, attempting to shield you but acknowledging defeat

Understanding that experience would shape your future

Allowed you to walk amongst the masses

And when the court jester carelessly played with your heart and shattered it

Your kingdom rose against him, in righteous indignation

For trampling what was sacred ground

Only after the betrayal you attended a masked ball

And the mask never came off

You began to carry your own shield, defensive now where once there was innocence

You spoke of things foreign to your kingdom of lands and places they had yet to travel

And your subjects became wary but still polished your diamond-encrusted throne.

You have changed now; the mask stays in place

The new lands traveled have altered your internal make-up

Like a miswrote decree you have been edited, loyalty and honor gone

And in its place cynicism and scorn

But remember the peons of your kingdom, the smallest of the small

Who still look to you with unbridled worship

Would you have them look away too? Grow wary of your new laws and turn away?

They still polish your diamond-encrusted throne but for how long?
