This might seem silly to some people, but I am going to share anyway because I think it is sweet.
When my husband and I were first married, probably at our first Christmas, I bought us “happy glasses.” It was a glass with something special on it: a movie, tv show, or character that we loved. When one of us was aware the other was having a bad day, we would make it a point to serve the other a drink in their Happy Glass. It was just a small way of saying – Hey, I know today kind of sucked and if you want to talk about it I am here, but in the meantime here is something that makes you smile.
I don’t remember what our original Happy Glasses were. The tradition has carried on through the years, usually in mug form – because it is always easy to get a happy mug. We have a plethora, literally our cabinet is overflowing with mugs. We have so many that I have put some aside to give to the kids when they leave the nest. Glasses, however, are a little harder to find. We have a few of the adult variety that I will share here, but regular drinking glasses – not so much.
This Christmas, I found a Robin Hood glass for my son – Disney’s Robin Hood. It was the one movie, besides Toy Story, that he would watch again and again. It was a great memory and we renewed the search for Happy Glasses. I still need one for my husband and daughter. Recently, my daughter was out shopping and found one for me. It was the Princess Bride. On the back it says “Contents May Contain Iocane Powder.” I immediately and silently offered the glass to her and she said, “If I were a wise man…” If you know, you know.
That’s the magic of a book and a movie – the magic of lasting lifelong memories. It’s the smile in the sharing and the magic of a happy glass.
